LOTA, kumbha or kalasha has had a tremendous significance in Vedic, Buddhist and Jain ritualism as a symbol of wealth and fertility. It the most versatile of Indian pots, derives its basic shape from a gourd. Among other natural products, like the melon, mango, pumpkin, coconut and the lotus that have more obviously determined the forms of some Indian utensils. Series of convex fluting of the melon have inspired the shape of many pots in India.
